Humbrol 110 Natural Wood Enamel has been my go-to for any wooden surface when modelling. Facing the tedious task of paint 30-40 spears for a Saga War band this humble tin eases the pain. Like all tinned enamel paints surrender now the delusion that you will ever finish a tin. As happened to me innumerable times. I had a batch of figures to paint, prised the lid open, and thar she blows, the dreaded skin had formed. Several jabs with cocktail sticks and there was actually viable paint under the skin but this has been the experience of painters since enamels appeared.
In a rush, one or two coats, job done. Or as an undercoat for an acrylic wood which would have a better texture (not so shiny). If you really, want, if your wooden surface has grain then undercoat white then apply this as a thin wash to pick out the grain.
