Cricut: How to Make a Festive Cloche Table Decoration

Level
Beginner
Time
1 hour
Budget
10 - 30

Glass cloches make the perfect blank canvas for you to show off your Cricut skills. Decorate the inside of each cloche with beautifully constructed paper winter scenes, then add a few final finishing touches on the glass dome using Cricut adhesive vinyls.

Whatever you create, it's easy to create a something that fits your style and theme using the elements within the Design Space app and your favourite papers and vinyls.

Please note: This project contains paid-for content from Cricut's Design Space app. Screen reference images are taken from the desktop Windows version of Design Space.

This project has been created on the Cricut Maker, however it can also be created on the Explore Air 2 and Joy.

Project and instructions by Hobbycraft Artisan Vicky Boyns.

How to make

You will also need -

* Cricut Design Space app installed on your Mac, PC or laptop.

Step 1

Open the Cricut Design Space app and start a new project.

Open the "Images" menu on the left-hand side of the screen, type 'Christmas tree 3D' into the search bar at the top of the screen, and select a Christmas tree design - I've used #M458C6 - select the image, then click "Insert".

Step 2

Image #M458C6 will then appear on your canvas, the design will have three layers to it, however we only want to keep two of them. To delete one of the layers, highlight the trees and select the "Ungroup" function, move the tree layers to separate them out, then delete the solid black tree.

Step 3

Drag a selection box over the two remaining trees and select the "Group" function.

Replicate the image twice using the "Duplicate" function located on the right-hand side of the screen, you should now have three trees on your canvas.

Highlight one tree and amend the height to 5". Select another tree and adjust this height so that it's slightly smaller. Finally, select the third tree and resize it so that it's slightly smaller than the second tree.

Duplicate each tree twice.

You should have nine trees of varying heights on your canvas.

Step 4

Drag a selection box over all of the trees and change the tree colour to white using the small square swatch next to the cut function. Click on it and a colour palette will appear, select your colour (in this case white) and all the trees will change colour - this helps to organise the colours on the mat.

Once happy with everything in the canvas screen, click the green "Make It'" button in the top right-hand corner of the screen.

Step 5

Once through to the mat preview screen, check you're happy with how each of the mats is set up, then select "Continue".

Step 6

Once through to the machine set up screen, select "Cardstock - medium weight" from the "Popular Materials" menu.

Step 7

Secure your cardstock to the mat and make sure you have the Fine Cut blade in your Cricut machine.

Load your mat into the machine by pressing the flashing arrow button, then press the flashing Cricut icon to start the cut.

Top Tip: The Cricut Brayer and XL Scraper tool are ideal for helping to ensure larger pieces of cardstock are secured to your cutting mat.

Step 8

Paint the wooden base of the cloche to match your chosen colour palette. Leave to dry before applying a second coat of paint for an even finish.

Step 9

Assemble each pair of the trees by slotting them together.

Use a paintbrush to apply tacky glue to the top of trees, leave the glue to set for a few seconds, then dip the glued area into biodegradable glitter. Leave to dry.

Repeat the process on the remaining trees.

Step 10

Once everything is dry, use a glue gun to stick the trees to the base of the cloche.

Top tip: As the trees are being secured in place, tuck a small amount of recycled polyester filling in between the trees (it's easier than trying to fill the gaps after).

Continue to fill the rest of the base with the remaining trees and recycled polyester filling to emulate snow.

Step 11

To decorate the glass dome of the cloche, I cut out some snowflakes, trees and a deer to adhere to the inside.

Once the designs have been cut and weeded, apply the designs to the inside of the dome, Transfer Tape can be used, however the snowflakes are easier to apply using a pair of tweezers.

Step 12

Once all of the vinyl elements have been added to the inside of the cloche, carefully place the glass dome onto the decorated wooden base, then display in pride of place on your dining table.

Alternative Designs

There's no end to the designs you can create, and there are so many different cloche designs to choose from! Hanging glass cloches are ideal for creating mini scenes to display on your Christmas tree, or even hang from a branch over your dining table.
