Cricut: How to Make a Personalised House Sign

Level
Intermediate
Time
1 hour
Budget
10 - 30

Craft a personalised house number sign ready to decorate your home with this Cricut Maker project! This custom-made house sign is easy to create using adhesive vinyl and basswood, and it's sure to look wonderful once displayed.

As this sign will be going outside, you will need to make sure to use Cricut Permanent Adhesive Vinyl, as this will withstand the wear and tear of outside use. We have also used a clear matt varnish to seal the wooden circle panel.

How to make

You will also need -

* Cricut Design Space app installed on a laptop or PC

* Clear Matt Weatherproof Varnish

Step 1

Measure your sign base halfway across the width and then the height from that distance also. Make a note of these measurements for later.

Step 2

In Cricut Design Space, start a new project and select a circle and square from the "Shapes" menu.

Position the square over the circle halfway down and use the "Slice" tool on both layers. This will cut the circle in half. Keep the half circle shape and remove the excess.

Step 3

Unlock the half circle shape by selecting the shape and clicking on the padlock icon. Resize this to the measurements you previously took of your sign base as this is going to cover half the sign.

Step 4

Insert the numbers using the "Text" tool, we used the "Beach Bum" font in Cricut Design Space.

Step 5

Select the "Text" once more and input your street name, we used the "Annie Leu" font available in Cricut Design Space.

To link the font together, select the text and use the "Ungroup" option. You will now see each letter has its own layer. Overlap each letter to join each one together, then select all the letters of each word and use the "Weld" tool to merge the layers together.

Step 6

Once happy with the design, click "Make it"!

Secure the permanent vinyl to your LightGrip or StandardGrip cutting mat.

Step 7

Once you have cut out all the vinyl, go back to the project in Design Space and select the eye icon on all layers accept the number layer.

Select "Make It" again and cut the numbers out from basswood. For this you will need to insert the knife blade into the Cricut Maker.

Step 8

Secure the basswood to your StrongGrip mat with masking tape, and make sure the white star wheels on your machine are pushed to one side to avoid leaving marks in the wood.

Load the mat into the machine and start the cut. A progress wheel will then appear on screen advising the number of passes and time remaining on the cut.

Once cut, carefully remove it from the mat.

Step 9

Weed all three pieces of vinyl using a weeding tool.

Step 10

Use Transfer Tape to apply the gold numbers individually to the basswood cuts.

Top Tip: Use the Cricut Brayer or Scraper tool to secure each number to the matching piese of basswood, either of these tools will ensure there are no air pockets in the vinyl.

Once the vinyl is secure, remove the Transfer Tape slowly and at an angle.

Step 11

Add the half circle piece of vinyl to the plaque using Transfer Tape, again using the Brayer or Scraper tool to ensure there are no air bubbles.

Stpe 12

Position the numbers onto the base of the sign in the centre.

Top Tip: Use a ruler to help position each of the numbers centrally.

Use a weather-resistant super glue to adhere the numbers to the sign.

Step 13

Add the vinyl street name underneth the house number using Transfer Tape once more.

Top Top: To make sure the text is straight when securing it to the plaque use the grids on the Transfer Tape.

Step 14

The sign will need to be sealed using a weatherproof clear matt varnish.

Take extra care when applying the varnish around the raised numbers to aovid it pooling in places.

Leave to dry, and then secure in pride of place outside your home.
