How to Make a Foiled Christmas Card

It's so great to be back here on the Hobbycraft blog today to share with you a foiled Christmas card design using the fabulous First Edition Craft Foiling Machine. A couple of months ago I wrote this post sharing a tutorial on how to use this magic making machine, and when is a better time to show off it's 'shine' in all of it's glory… Christmas of course!

Every year I make my own handmade Christmas cards for that added personal touch, not to mention it's also extremely fun and completely satisfies my crafty needs. I'm sure that everyone who knows me well enough by now is well aware of my love for craft and handmade gifts.

About a month ago, I was on a photoshoot and the flower props that we used included some beautiful Asparagus Fern. As soon as I looked at the structure and shapes of the leaves I instantly saw mini Christmas trees. I was immediately conjuring up a Christmas card design in my head – and was extremely thankful to have a flower press kit that I was bought for my birthday. Foiling machine, plus coloured card, plus mini pressed 'Christmas trees' equals the perfect handmade card, sent with love of course.

How to make

Step 1

I pressed the fern, leaving four weeks for it to dry. As soon as it was ready to be dismantled I began making some pretty foiled 'Merry Christmas' signs for that added festive touch and used the foiling machine to create them.

Step 2

Next, I printed out a number of 'Merry Christmas' titles on to red card and foiled the laserjet black ink with gold foil – very festive indeed!

Step 3

Once the card and foil had gone through the machine, I peeled back the foil to reveal the now-gold 'Merry Christmas' signs. I used a pencil and sharp craft knife to neatly cut out the banners ready to stick on to the card.

Step 4

Using a Hi-Tack craft glue, I carefully stuck down the banners and pressed fern, then left them to dry with a paperclip attached so the cards didn't open.

Step 5

Once dried, I added gold star embellishments at the top of the 'trees'. `And just like that, they were complete!
