Darth Vader used this prototype, the basis for the frighteningly effective TIE Interceptor, in the Battle of Yavin. Unlike all other TIE fighters, this prototype has a deflector shield generator and a simple hyperdrive.
Vader's TIE Advanced is armed with heavy dual blaster cannons, but it has no life support systems. The TIE Advanced features a dural steel alloy hull, an extended aft deck and unique solar cell wings.
Like all TIE vessels, the prototype's propulsion system consists of twin-ion engines. Its solar ionisation reactor is considered much more powerful than that of the standard TIE fighters. Pilots' chances of survival have also been significantly improved by the installation of a hyperdrive system, which allows the ship to escape hopeless battles.
